The U.S. Navy has used FASTORQ ZipTENSIONERs in their Nimitz-class nuclear carriers to remove manways in order to refuel a reactor. There is very limited access for humans around the manways, With the help of FASTORQ’s ZipTENSIONERs in a F.A.S.T. (Fully Automated Stud Tensioner) unit, the bolts on the flange were loosened and tightened without human intervention.

Stud Tensioning

102_9879ZipTensionersZipTENSIONER Stud Tensioners use Double ZipNut technology and have been used in several industries for reliable and fast tensioning. They cut job time by 90 percent and provide 100 percent coverage on the same side of the flange. ZipTENSIONERs work by using spring-loaded thread segments that allow the tensioner to slide over the protruding stud threads.

Elastic interactions are eliminated, and the old standard of twisting and turning heavy and awkward standard stud tensioners is a thing of the past. ZipTENSIONERs are compact, lightweight and simply slide on and off the stud, even past damage and corrosion, to provide accurate tension with incredibly impressive speeds. The time reduction when using ZipTENSIONERs can save hundreds of thousands of dollars in just one use.

A channel head cover on a shell and tube heat exchanger at a Hydrocracker unit in a popular refinery had a problem. In the past, the 28 bolts in the cover, measuring 2 1/2″ in diameter, were torqued using hydraulic torque wrenches. It took more than 14 hours to complete bolt preload to the prescribed torque value. Elastic interactions (cross talk) caused the long torque time.

Over the course of multiple turnarounds, the flange typically leaked during the required hydrostatic test. This usually required an additional four to six hours to stop the leak. When engineers determined that tensioning was the best way to shorten the bolt preload time and eliminate leaking during the hydrostatic test, FASTORQ’s ZipTENSIONER provided the solution.

ZipTENSIONERs are customizable and can be manufactured to accommodate bolt size and thread pitch.

F.A.S.T. System

For even faster and safer tensioning, look to FASTORQ’s F.A.S.T. (Fully Automated Stud Tensioner) System.

This system takes the human interaction of tensioning and completely removes it. Controlled by a single hydraulic power console, this system incorporates multiple ZipTENSIONERS into one frame that is lowered onto all of the studs on the same side of a flange. With the push of a button, all of the tensioners are simultaneously energized and the nuts turned down. Once finished, F.A.S.T. removes just as easily as it went on.

Bringing flanges together subsea can be an especially difficult task. The ZipPULLER uses ZipNut Technology to pull flanges together in an operation similar to the movement of an inchworm. The ZipNut holds the load as the cylinder retracts. The release levers open and close puller bars for fast installation and quick removal.

By using the ZipPULLER, the need to reset the tool after each pull is removed.

In this incredibly challenging subsea application, flange pulling becomes infinitely safer and more productive. Zip-Lift_application_3x4_300ppiIt can also be used in land-based applications or anywhere heavy equipment needs positioning.

The versatile ZipPULLER is ideally suited for ROV, hard suits or divers. It can operate in any Subsea depth. The ZipPULLER is easy to use since it pushes on and pulls off standard threaded rods – no threading!

ZipLIFT

Another tool that uses Double ZipNut Technology is the ZipLIFT. It has been been used in radioactive areas at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee as well as other facilities and in the removal of subsea Christmas trees and BOP’s.

The ZipLIFT provides safe and reliable lifting strength in hazardous areas where human intervention is limited. The tool utilizes a unique segmented nut that opens while positioned on mating threads and locks onto the threaded rod with the weight of the load when lifted. It will not release the load until is has safely landed because it depends on slack in the line to allow its thread segments to disengage.

Since it uses ZipNut technology, the ZipLIFT does not require twisting or turning and can quickly engage and disengage the load. It is robotic adaptable and provides a positive connection without the use of shackles and pins.

AutoZIP VIV Mechanism Fasteners
